The socio-political upheaval of the last quarter of the 20th century had a significant impact on the performance of music and the life of musicians in Afghanistan. A recently completed history of Afghan music indicates that musicians have for many decades been a long-term influence for progressive development in Afghanistan. The revival of music and music education, and the improvement of the social status of musicians in Afghanistan, should be part of the rebuilding of the country and its culture. For background information see project background.
